Paid Positions

Notetakers agree to share their notes with a peer in the classroom. They can choose to receive a $100 stipend per a class or volunteer to share their notes for free.

Incentives for notetakers:

  • Notetakers are able to place their role as a notetaker for DRC on their resume for future jobs.
  • They are eligible to receive $100 stipend per semester, per class. There is no limit to how many classes they can take notes for every semester.

Important Information for faculty:

  • Students and professors are responsible for finding a notetaker. If a notetaker cannot be found, please contact a DRC counselor to brainstorm an alternative accommodation.
  • Notes may be published on Canvas for all students in the class who may require another set of notes to help them study.

Options for delivery of notes:

  • A hard copy of notes will be given directly to DRC (copy will be made free of charge in the DRC office)
  • An electronic copy of notes will be emailed directly to DRC (e.g. Microsoft Word document, scanned copy of notes, pictures of notes)
  • An electronic copy of the notes will be uploaded to an online file sharing platform (e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox) where it will be shared with the DRC and the professor
  • An electronic copy of the notes will be uploaded to an online file sharing platform (e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox) where it will be shared directly with the student.
  • Notetaker may make another suggestion for delivery

Confidentiality:

Sometimes students who require notes from a peer want to disclose their identity to their notetaker, so they can collect the notes from them right after the class is over. If this is the case, we require the notetaker to complete the Confidentiality Agreement (which can also be found on the "Forms" page). A breech of this agreement will result in immediate termination, disciplinary action from the college, and even legal action. 

However, when the student requiring the notes does not feel comfortable revealing their identity, the notetaker will deliver the notes directly to DRC or the professor, so that we can deliver them to the student without compromising their privacy.

In order to receive $100, you must:

  • Be enrolled in at least 7 units
  • Be authorized to work in the United States (have a Social Security number)
    • International students can also be paid, as long as they can provide a copy of the following:
      • Origin I-20
      • I-94
      • Foreign passport
  • Submit the Assistant Welcome Packet (will be provided by DRC)
  • Submit I-9 form (will be provided by DRC)

 

Requirements:

  • Technology skills, such as Microsoft Office, Windows, Google Suite, Canvas, Websmart, and OneLogin
  • Willing to work with students with learning challenges

      • Federal Work Study: at least 1 unit

      • Have filed FAFSA for the school year
      • Be eligible to receive need-based aid for the year
      • Be able to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress

    • If you are not eligible to be paid, you may work as a volunteer to gain work experience.

Additional desirable qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of assistive technology, such as Kurzweil and smart pens.
  • Competent in graphic design principals, web design
  • Bi-lingual is also a plus (e.g. Spanish, Mandarin, ASL, etc)

Duties and responsibilities include any of the following:

  • Marketing duties:
    • Update web pages.
    • Design accessible graphics, flyers, and announcements for events.
    • Manage technology at events and presentations.
    • Manage and design content and graphics for Wellness Center newsletters.
    • Participate in event tabling.
  • Directed technical services and use of complex software:
    • Creation of interactive forms/text, such as fillable PDFs, online forms, and accessible textbooks and materials for students with visual/reading challenges.
    • Zone editing.
    • Train students to use assistive technology for their schoolwork, such as Kurzweil, Otter, and smartpens.
    • Help students troubleshoot problems with assistive technology.
    • Assist students with their classwork, homework, or projects that involve technology.
    • Assist in transcribing audio recordings and captioning videos.
    • Serve as a scribe or reader for students who have reading, visual, and/or fine motor challenges.
    • Assist faculty with making sure their materials are accessible (e.g. training them how to put alt text all of their images on their PowerPoint presentations and worksheets, helping them connect their microphone to the computer for CART services, etc).
    • Assist with setting up DRC accessible equipment in the classroom, such as microphones.
  • Office tasks:
    • Send reminders to students.
    • Assist students in completing forms. 
    • Maintain confidentiality of all information and correspondence of students whom you support.
  • Optional: If possible, assist with level A, B, and C duties as needed.

Volunteer Positions

Disability Resource Center (DRC) administration and faculty are excited to mentor future educators. We welcome students to apply to intern in our department.

DRC Counseling Internship Requirements:

Counseling internship positions are open to registered practicum students who currently enrolled in an accredited master’s program or who already have a counseling degree and would like to add disability counseling to their skill set. One-on-one clinical experience is preferred but not required.

Description:

Our DRC Counseling Trainees are trained to review documentation (medical records, IEPs, 504 plans, psych-ed reports), create reasonable accommodations, draft accommodation memos, collaborate with other counselors in different departments (e.g. EOPS, Promise, TRIO, PCC), and collaborate with colleagues in the Wellness Center, which include nurses, a medical doctor, and personal counselors. Trainees will become familiar with accessibility law and the assistive technologies that we offer students. They will also support faculty and staff who would like to consult with us regarding their own disabilities. 

Trainees are expected to reach out to other departments on behalf of students (e.g. Financial Aid, Admissions and Records), and collaborate with off-campus resources (e.g. Department of Rehabilitation, Lighthouse for the Blind).  

Trainees will refer to academic policies and procedures to help students make decisions regarding dropping classes, requesting incomplete grades, taking a medical leave of absence, etc.  

Most importantly, trainees are expected to meet with students to help them with unexpected situations or circumstances that affect their studies, such as financial hardships, increased symptoms from physical or mental health conditions, challenges with professors that are causing them emotional distress, etc.

Position compensation:

Internship positions are non-paid positions. Hours will be compensated by credits from interns' universities.
