The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at Cañada College prepares immigrant and international students to achieve their academic, vocational and personal goals.

In alignment with the college mission, the ESL program offers classes so that students can develop language and academic skills including analytical, critical, and creative thinking, and effective communication.

NEW Students - Five Quick Steps to Success

  1. Complete the Cañada College Application. For questions about the application, please contact Diana Espinoza-Osuna, ESL Department Retention Specialist at (650) 306-3388.   When the application is accepted, you will receive a student identification number (G-number).
  2. Take the placement test.  You will need your G-number.  Click here for information about the placement test.
  3. Meet with a counselor to discuss your test results and get help with your academic planning. To make an appointment, please call the Counseling Center at (650) 306-3452
  4. Register for classes: Click here for the current class schedule.
  5. Begin attending classes! Check the semester schedule and mark your calendar for the first day of class. Make time to meet your professor and fellow classmates and buy your books at the college bookstore.

Returning/Continuing Students

Students completing this program will be able to:

  • Produce and interpret oral and written English in order to successfully enter academic or career pathways.
  • Successfully use academic resources, study skills, and technology competency skills.
  • Develop specific academic and career goals by creating a Student Educational Plan (SEP) and/or identifying and assessing educational opportunities at Cañada College.
